Sauer, Second Vice-President; Thaison Leaser, Past President; Ray Able, Secretary/Treasurer. For Immediate Release | January 16, 2017 Optimist Club to Sponsor Essay Contest for Students The Optimist Club of Van Wert is encouraging area students to contemplate the phrase "Chasing Optimism in the Face of Challenges" as part of the Optimist International Essay Contest for 2017. The contest is open to all Van Wert County students who were under age 18 as of October 1, 2016. The Essay Contest entry deadline is February 15, 2016. The Optimist Club will judge the local students’ essays, and determine the top winners. Local winners will receive medallions along with cash awards of 1st place ($300) and 2nd place ($150). Optimist Club of Van Wert to Sponsor Oratorical Contest for Students The Optimist Club of Van Wert wants to inform you about its annual Oratorical Contest for students to be held Sunday, February 19, 2017. The topic this year is “What the World Gains from Optimism.” Students’ speeches will be judged based on content and presentation to determine the top boy and girl winners. First-place winners will receive a $300 prize and advance to the zone or regional level, and possibly the district level for the opportunity to win scholarships. The Oratorical Contest challenges students to express their thoughts and opinions to an audience with the opportunity to win prizes and scholarships. The Optimist Club of Van Wert is proud to bring you the inaugural Avenue of Flags program. We invite you to participate in our patriotic community service program and fundraiser called the Avenue of Flags. It is a wonderful way to honor our troops and help us support our youth programs and activities. We will place a 3’ by 5’ high-quality, American flag on a 10’ flag pole within 15’ of the curb in front of your home or business for the following days surrounding five national holidays: Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day.
